ZANZIBAR ISLAND

Romantic Beach Holidays

This romantic paradise Indian Ocean Island lies approximately 35 km off the coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar is an un-spoilt tropical island with an idyllic mix of palm tree beaches and turquoise sea with a strong historic Arabic influence. It’s the largest coral island off the coast of Africa where Centuries–old sailing dhows still sail the waters around and ornately carved wooden doors still decorate its homes. The scent of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg abound, giving Zanzibar the nickname the ‘Island of Spices’.Zanzibar is an ideal extension of your Tanzania or Kenya wildlife safari with almost direct flights from the various destinations into Zanzibar. A 15 minutes flight connects Zanzibar to the Dar-es-Salaam airport in Tanzania with regular flight connections to world destinations.

Zanzibar is a true tropical island with superb weather year-round. A number of tiny islands surround it, including Pemba, renowned for excellent scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. The unspoiled marine environment in the famous Pemba Channel also offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, fantastic deep-sea fishing and a variety of watersports. Visitors here also enjoy chartering sailboats and visits to historic Prison Island with its giant tortoises and dhow races.

There are many excursions you can undertake like visits to the spice plantations (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom and others) or bargaining for carvings and a variety of fish in the Central Market, or go swimming with the dolphins and visit the Mangrove swamps and visit the rare Callabas monkeys.

Strolling through the ancient town of Stone Town is a walk back into the history of the old Sultans that reigned Zanzibar for so long. All in all a very complex history since, through the slave trade, staple foods such as maize and manioc today forms the agricultural subsistence of the rural communities. The picturesque cooking fires of the various chefs selling their Zanzibari cuisine in the evening along the beach of Stone Town, is an absolute must to indulge in.

Then of course there are the sandy, palm-fringed beaches with spectacular hotels and lodges on the East Coast, which offer untouched, wide, white sand beaches and beautiful turquoise sea.

One needs a very good understanding of all the lodges and hotels available and what they offer in order to find the perfect fit.

How to get there

By air is the only feasible method for reaching Zanzibar from outside East Africa. There are very few direct flights, but from Dar es Salaam it is not too difficult to book a short hop flight to Zanzibar or there are frequent ferries. Ethiopian, Qatar, Emirates and KLM are for example airlines flying to Dar es Salaam.

International direct flights from Johannesburg, South Africa

Local and Charter flights from Nairobi or Dar es Salaam

The Best Time to Go on Safari
